Personal Statement

I am hard working, dedicated and focused, with a belief in the fundamental principles of international society, a passion for politics and law, and particularly human rights. My passion is humanity, the planet and its rhythms - living in tune and listening to what is as yet unheard. I am fanatical about the utility of expression, communication, respect and purpose.  My approach is always interested and open, engaging and thoughtful, with a thirst for new experiences and the learning of new skills. In everything I do, I am well motivated by high standards and focused goals.

University study has enhanced my analytical and research abilities and developed my understanding and passion toward International Relations, and International Humanitarian Law.  Responsibilities I have taken on whilst at university have highlighted my passions for many different aspects of life and proved my ability to balance workloads and maintain focus. As Student President I frequently delivered speeches to the public, submission to University Councils, and gave press interviews on behalf of the student body. Further, writing commissions from the Guardian and Amnesty International UK have strengthened my ability to present written argument. Throughout employment I have practised a confident integrity—whether working in engineering, student politics or human rights campaigning.

I am now studying at Cambridge University for the Senior Status qualification in law, having been awarded a scholarship to do so from Gray’s Inn. It is my intent to be called to the UK Criminal Bar, and to practice in public and criminal international law. I continue to write and publish academic journal articles based upon my principle areas of research - Access to Dialogue and the Voice of Affected Peoples (structures of engagement in international society). I am working for both the idea and reality of access to human dialogue, and one day hope to understand why we give voice to those with the power to effect, and not to those affected.

I also write poetry and prose, play and perform music, enjoy theatre, literature and political debate, and have a passion for the visual and performing arts. I cycle often and take time out to walk in the hills as often as possible, enjoying the space this gives me to relax and think.

Skills and Experience

My main field of expertise is political and human rights related research. My degree research ‘Access to Dialogue and the Voice of Affected Peoples’ explores the philosophy of communication, the application of classical and modern political theory during field research in post-genocide Rwanda (2004). During my year as Student President, I have produced reports for various University and Government Committees, including for example, the Quality Assurance Agency. Whilst working with Amnesty International UK I produced Human Rights centred country research reports (Colombia, Sudan), involving interview and documentary research. I have also produced Scientific Research - fibre characterisation reports for clients such as Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, CityGroup and Bloomberg, disaster recovery procedures for BT, and written and delivered detailed training courses for Siemens.

I am a competent public speaker, confident and resourceful, with a breadth of experience in front of a range of audiences.  I have also produced and delivered bespoke engineering training, including certification and test laboratories. I have delivered human rights education assemblies for primary and secondary school children, speeches to political rallies, and highly technical courses to large teams of engineers for companies such as Siemens Network Systems, in London and Amsterdam. I have also regularly delivered campaigns training and run political workshops with Amnesty International and the National Union of Students.

I have a proven track record of success in leadership, attracting a great deal of respect for my teams and I, and maintaining focus in the most pressurised of environments. This includes one year as a Team Leader, one year as a Company Director, and one year as Student President.
